Lubricant and vibration


Q  -  Is it possible to reduce pump vibration by using a specialty lubricant?


A  -  There are many anecdotal evidence claiming significant reduction in pump
vibration level by using special synthetic lubricants [ * ] in bearing housings.
These synthetic lubricants are said to provide better lubrication and high film
strength compared to mineral oils of the same ISO grade. The synthetic lubricants
comply with TSCA, EPA, and OSHA requirements.


Some examples:

- A water pump that switched over from mineral oil synthetic lubricant showed a
reduction in vibration level from 0.07 to 0.05 inch per second, accompanied by 15
degrees Fahrenheit reduction in its bearing temperature.

- A chemical pump experienced not only a significant reduction in overall vibration,
but also a 3% reduction in power consumption by simply switching to a synthetic
lubricant [ * ]

- In an injection pump, the use of synthetic lubricant not only reduced its vibration,
but also reduced the bearing temperature low enough to allow the water cooling
of the bearing housing to be eliminated.

In some situations, reducing the pump vibration to avoid costly downtime, and to
prolong the useful life of an equipment, need not be an expensive proposition - It
may be as simple as using a specialty lubricant. But in most cases, reducing the
vibration of a pump requires other measures depending on its severity.
